    Great faces in silver #3

From time to time great faces show up in silver and silverplate. We thought it would be fun to start a thread where we post photos of great silver faces.

Here are two photos of sterling silver cat faces on a salt and pepper shaker in my collection. Made in Germany for the American market. They are 2.5" tall.

Circa 1885 bracelet & brooch by Howard Sterling Co. Various classical figures--Cicero, Hector, etc. Believe the pin depicts Ajax.

I like this one, only because it is so goofy. It is on the back of a World's Colombian Exposition souvenir spoon, and I guess it is supposed to be King Ferdinand. Who knew he had a sausage for a nose?

Now that the sale is completed, I just had to post this great unmarked silverplate pitcher offered recently at the auction house where I work.

Hi all,

Here are two more additions to the great faces page (and to my collection).

The squirrel is one of a set of salt and pepper shakers, with crystal bodies and silver heads. Rats with tails, indeed!. This angle flatters, the close up (2nd photo) shows the species in their true light.

Whew... now to a more soothing creature.

I have seen this rabbit baby spoon made in Mexico, but never in the USA. It follows that Porter Blanchard made this one. The bunn is hammered.. The bowl is smooth. Neat piece.

The mark on the back is PORTER BLANCHARD, STERLING. Spoon is 4" long.

Enjoy..

Here are 3 examples of silver lion heads. They come from danish sugar bowls. Each bowl has 2 heads holding rings. There are 100 years between the last head and the 2 first.

Lion 1911 "løve maskeron" in danish (don't know the English word for maskeron.)
Lion head from sugar bowl Denmark 1911.

The second lion is from another 1911 sugar bowl. Also danish.

The use of lions holding a ring has a long history. This lion are a real nice and old one. Sugarbowl danish 1812. Its amazing they found their inspiration. 100 years between the two first lion heads and the third one.
Shall see if I can post this in the other section Great faces in silver #3.

Here's another Gorham buckle - marked B 1403.
The ring at the top probably was added.
The piece hanging has a recognizable Gorham element on the front, and a watch hook on the back; also may have been added.

I've been wanting to post in this thread for a long time, and this week I acquired a beautiful Merry Christmas spoon with New Orleans engraved in the bowl just so I could do so!

This bears the Mechanics / Watson H in a pennant mark.

This thread continues in Great faces in silver #4
