Hello all,

I know some of our members enjoys doing patent searches. I was recently able to leaf through an 1879 copy of the Jewelers' Circular and Horological Review, and found this paragraph in a short article on the origin and use of table forks. Anyway, there are several patents listed that I thought would be fun to see. Anyone want to take up the task?

Interesting fellow, Fred Beach. These patents were awarded while he was still a student at Yale. His father was Alfred Ely Beach, founder of Scientific American and, in the dead of night and without permission, the creator/builder of the New York Pneumatic Subway that opened for business on February 26, 1870, running one block beneath Broadway from Warren to Murry. Son Frederick later took the reigns of his father's magazine and also edited the Encyclopedia Americana.

And here's for Mr. Dixon -- does anyone eat green corn these days?

You mean you don't eat green corn? Even on St. Patrick's Day?

Thank you all for posting these. I think the integral sharpener in the carving fork is the best idea of the bunch. Shakers in the handles is pretty awkward, and who would have thought you could patent a bent fork? Ms Draper's fork is intriguing; I guess the idea was that you would nibble a piece of fruit while holding the fork vertical. I doubt it was ever made, but if it had been I'm sure we would be puzzling over its use. I'd love to have seen one.
