I have received this question on more than once occassion and I am hoping this forum can assist me. In the older Kettle & Stands with sterling or silverplate burners, what is the best type of fuel to use (that is available today) that will work without damaging the burner and or the pot?

After doing some research, I found an old advertising card that answered my questions...
  1. Use denatured alcohols a fuel in this burner.
  2. Do not fill fuel container over 2/3 full.
  3. Reduce flame after lighting, as low as possible.
  4. If this burner is used with a chafing dish, always make sure there is sufficient water in the hot water pan
  5. Do not try to heat dry food in a Pyrex dish directly over the flame. Absence of liquid may cause the glass to crack.

I would also suggest that the kettle not be left unattended. The heat can very rapidly build up and damage the kettle.
