Hello Fellow Members! I am looking for a post that explains swirl type marks on the bottom of items. Thanks as always in advance for your help. Jersey IP: Logged |

Is it something to do with engine turning, or am I missing the point? IP: Logged |

From memory this came up in a discussion about engine turning, where the 1950s/60s fashion for the decoration of the bases of such flat things as trays and salvers was mentioned. A pattern of small concentric circes was made on these bases with a lathe or milling machine. Suggest a search under 'engine turning'. IP: Logged |

Hello bascall & adelapt! Thank you both, and you are both on the right tract. The post had lots of photo's showing these circles & also a reference to watches. It may have had to do with if it was a damage to the piece. These circles were made on the bottom by the makers mark, but it meant something. Jersey IP: Logged |

That "engine turning" was often used in classic cars, especially dashboards, though Ettore Bugatti decorated his engines with it. I believe the correct term for it is Damascening, though I'm not sure if that spelling is correct, and derives from the city of Damascus in Syria, which was well known for its steel work. Originally it was applied with a hand tool with abrasive, but in the machine age it was most applied with an abrasive button mounted in a drill press. The pressure applied would be just enough to create the swirl. middletom IP: Logged |
