[01-2732] This is on a fountain pen but I don't know what it means. If it's a pen size why the fraction? Is it some odd 18k mark or does it mean 1/8 18k g.f.? Any suggestions appreciated.

other than a 1904 patent mark there is no maker's name but the nib is marked warranted 14k made in USA. IP: Logged |

Try searching the Internet for Fountain Pen Network. Yours maybe a Wahl. Site members say their metal pens at this time had limited markings as you describe, in your case were gold filled and should read 18 1/8K. IP: Logged |

Vathek, could it refer to the gold filled %? I know Gold filled (which is a fused laminate of gold-copper-gold like Sheffield plate) is marked by the % of gold and usually ranges from 10% to 20% and is so marked. I have learned this from a friend who buys gold filled eye glass frames and watch bands and checks the percentages to calculate his return on the gold melt. IP: Logged |

Bascall: I believe you are correct as the patent date of july 5 '04 is the same as marked on Wahl pens IP: Logged |

My guess and this is strictly a guess is that the 18 1/8 was meant to resemble 18K at a glance and was never 18 1/8 K. Just a little marketing ploy maybe. IP: Logged |

Apparently from about 1917 to 1923 Wahl did not mark its metal pens with its name, just a patent date. I also found out that as bascall mentioned, the 18 1/8 (k) was for gold filled. thanks for the replies IP: Logged |

The pen is gold filled. It is hard to tell from the photo but it appears that there is some brassing to the gold plating. The nib is solid 14K gold. The phrase "Warranted" means it is guaranteed to be solid 14K. This is what was normally stamped on 14K nibs that were used by non-name brand pen companies - ones often referred to as 'third tier makers' - that made pens for low cost end of the pen market. There are people who restore old pens such as this to working order for a modest cost. While third tier maker pens typically are not sought after by collectors they can be fun to use. IP: Logged |

The pen is definitely gold-filled, but I am surprised if it is really 1/8 18k gold filled. Most GF stuff seems to be in the approx. range of 1/20 12k to 1/10 14k. 1/8 18k is almost 4x as much gold as the former. Plus from the gold color and wear evident in the photograph, it just doesn't look like a 1/8 18k finish to me. 18-1/8K gold as far as I know doesn't exist. I think as bascall suggested these numbers were part of a marketing ploy meant to becloud consumers' minds (as they seem to have ours). IP: Logged |

Please note that what looks like brassing is one of those tricks of the lens as they are incised lines although they look like raised ones. The 18 1/8 marking was used by Wahl and possibly their predecessors Boston Safety Pen Co. IP: Logged |
