[01-2743] Ran across this little piece in the January 1892 American Journal of Photography:
Acid engraved bowl on Whiting Lily of the Valley teaspoon, there's even a little stripe-garbed inmate (trustee?) in front of the little gazebo-type shelter:

Thanks for the photo of your really interesting souvenir spoon, Cheryl. I am trying to get my mind wrapped around why on earth, back in the day, anyone would make much less buy a silver souvenir spoon from a jail. Did people back then go to jails as a tourism activity? I guess, maybe, that some store in the city might have had them made up to sell since the prison may have been one of the most famous things in town, but still - what a curious thing for people back at the turn of the century to buy. A few thoughts on the matter if I may are firstly that the facility itself was impressive and not a particularly unusual subject for a souvenir spoon, secondly that there were family connections with everyone associated with the prison, and thirdly and maybe just as important as any other reason is that it is said that crime is "sexy" and this is just another aspect of that subject. More bits & pieces..... 1897 article from The Ladies Home Journal on etching "Autograph Spoons" at home:
1893 ad for J.A. Goldstein, Washington, D.C., offering souvenir spoon etching - citing references as, "Tiffany & Co., New York; J.E. Caldwell & Co., Philadelphia; E. Jaccard Jewelry Co., St. Louis; J.H. Leyson Co., Salt Lake City; And a Thousand Other Dealers.":
1904 ad for The Watchmakers' and Jewelers' Practical Receipt Book, noting that it includes the "trade secret" method for etching souvenir spoons:

What interesting articles you find, Cheryl. The first spoon shown in that Ladies' Home Journal article is one of the Shiebler patter of multimotif coffee spoons I've been collecting. IP: Logged |
