[26-1884] I believe this is an acceptable post. If not, my apologies in advance. Could anyone recommend an engraver in the NYC area? I have a new goddaughter and found a great spoon which I would like to engrave. Thanks! IP: Logged |

Hello to you, I don't know if it is able to give names from retailers at this topic, but if you try the words N.Y. silver engravers at your side you can find some. I looked and found several but it is important to contact some retailers and let them give you a price index. One name is for instance George Bentley but there are more. Perhaps there are more reactions to come from N.Y. population silver collectors who have already let it done by some retailer and be able to give you advise, success. IP: Logged |

Engravers needed This is the web site of the Lindsay Airgraver and the page where you post what you need engraved... I have never used it but it may be useful. Thanks for the recommendation Scott. I thought I should post a picture of the spoon to sort of round things out as such.
I love the clock in the bowl to denote the time of birth. Just lovely. The spoon is by Webster Company. IP: Logged |

Does B.A. Perry have an email or website? Or is the best way to contact via phone? Thanks again, Kelly IP: Logged |

Hello. I wanted to follow up my post about looking for an engraver. I used Beth Perry in Boston. She engraved a christening cup, spoon and rattle for my new goddaughter and she did magnificient work. I give her the highest recommendation! Kelly IP: Logged |

I have used a Brooklyn firm a number of times with great success: Cannizzaro Seal & Engraving Co., Inc. IP: Logged |

Thank you Prichard for the Brooklyn firm I use Beth in Boston but some times she can be busy so it is good to have a back up. Do you know if they only do hand engraving? By the way Ms. Perry has moved to: [This message has been edited by agleopar (edited 01-21-2010).] IP: Logged |

Anyone who can cut a steel seal matrix using either a graver and a hammer (the old fashioned way) or more likely a hand held pneumatic graver, should be able to engrave freehand on silver. You should of course supply a drawing of the monogram or cypher to the engraver if you want to use an obscure font or style. There are only a few silver engravers in the United States with the skill to simply render an Art Nouveau style off the top of their heads. I have met one such master who still works part time for Tiffany & Co. and engraves their most expensive or elaborate pieces of silver by hand. Unfortunately, the United States does not have what the Soviets once had, that being an educational program for seal cutters, die sinkers and hand engravers at the amusingly named Institute of Rare Professions. One will find that the majority of skilled hand engravers in the world are Russian. I believe that there is also an engraving school of some type in or near Paris. Post Script: I had thought that this response had been posted at least five hours ago but it seems to have not been accepted. Past experience with other forums has taught me to save my responses on a Word.doc just in case they disappear into the silicon oblivion. IP: Logged |
