A .85 troy ounce sterling silver proof medal minted by the national commemorative society. The diameter is 1.5 inches. I can't read the name of the General. IP: Logged |

Mr Dietz may know, but my guess is General John Logan, McClean or McCellan(sp). BTW have a safe holiday to all of our members Jersey IP: Logged |

Appears to be General John A. Logan (a logical choice). ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

Never mind; failed to refresh the page before posting. [My best guess on the general's identity (from squinting at the letters and looking at the resemblances in the Wikipedia list of Civil War generals) is John A. Logan.] [This message has been edited by ellabee (edited 05-31-2010).] IP: Logged |

And it only stands to reason since he invented the day. IP: Logged |

He declared it (Memorial Day history) in 1868. But he did not invent it. The first Memorial Day observance was an extraordinary event in Charleston, South Carolina on May 1, 1865, only being officially remembered and recognized as such this past Memorial Day. IP: Logged |
