[26-1332] I once saw a pair of George III spoons nestled in a 20th c display box like a jeweler would use. Where can one buy such empty boxes? I suppose one custom cuts the foam beneath them then tucks in the velvet? Does anyone know any suppliers of nice boxes? IP: Logged |

If you do a search on the phrase 'display case' combined with the word 'archival' you should find many places to buy cases that should suit your purpose, though they are not inexpensive. If you are going to go with a general purpose case with a glass top and make your own fitted interior - you will want to be careful what you use in terms of foam and cloth. Silver is quite reactive to both sulfur and chlorine which are present in many such materials. You should either make sure the case and its interior are archival, jeweler, or museum quality in terms of being non-reactive with your nice silver, or you should make your own interior with non-reactive materials. Or, if you would like to go for something nice but not fancy at a much more modest cost you can search on the phrase 'riker mount' which is a commonly available case made in a range of sizes. Riker (pronounced RYE' ker) mounts are constructed of a black 'leatherette' type material with a glass top and come with white cotton batting inside to hold the object. They were originally invented for scientists to hold specimens like butterflies or botanical samples, but these days riker mounts are widely used by all kinds of collectors. IP: Logged |

Try searching this topic on the fourm. I recall a lengthy discussion we had a while back. Many hobby shops, crafts stores, etc. seel inexpensive, multi-purpose display boxes. Depending how much you want to spend, you might try one of the many do-it-yourself frame shops to see if they can help you build exactly what you want. You might also ask a jewler where he/she buys boxes. Good luck, [This message has been edited by tmockait (edited 01-22-2007).] IP: Logged |

Thanks for the helpful information. Actually, I performed a search for "display box" before I posted this topic as is the proper forum procedure. Perhaps I should have tried a different search topic? IP: Logged |

A few of the local historical societies use a natural cotton batting covered with shantung silk then insert a block of camphor. The cotton and silk have no effect on silver and the camphor fumes displace the oxygen in the case. Of course the case must be tightly sealed to prevent air from getting in and the smell of camphor from getting out. Seems like a lot of work for a home display. Good luck with whatever you decide upon. IP: Logged |

Here is the link the forum thread: Displaying spoons I posed the issue as "displaying spoons," which is why your search did not find it. good luck, IP: Logged |

Thanks for all of the ideas. I suppose I am wanting something very similar to the antique boxed English spoons one finds from Garrards or Asprey except without the name. I think having a custom looking box would be added value. IP: Logged |
