In gathering info for my posting of Summer antique shows,I came across an interesting promotion that sounds like a great attempt to encourage young collectors. There is a show up in New Hampshire Aug 12-14 that is granting free admission to anyone under 30 with proper id. I think this is a fabulous idea. Free has a certain way of attracting attention and you never know. Made me wonder what other cool ideas may work to draw in a younger crowd to the antiques market. IP: Logged |

How about a scavenger hunt - have them look for specific antiques that are in dealer's booths and mark a paper as to which booth they found it in. The winners (have more than one) could be given cash vouchers to spend at any dealer's booth to buy antiques, or have dealers donate prizes that would be given to winners. Another idea might be to get a couple of antique jewelry or clothing dealers to go talk to some local boutique stores and see if they would consign some things for sale in the boutique, and then put ads in the window of the store about the upcoming antique show where all kinds of unique jewelry and clothes and other things can be bought. Go to the local middle and high schools and talk with the history teachers - see if they would be willing to give an extra credit assignment to students who went to the antique show and wrote a paper on antique silver or jewelry or something? Give the students free admission and before the show arrange for your most knowledgeable dealers to give a presentation at the school on the history of interesting silver objects to spark the kid's interest. Maybe offer a small piece of antique silver as a prize for the best paper. [This message has been edited by Kimo (edited 07-20-2010).] IP: Logged |

Kimo, Good idea, but do they still teach history in public school? IP: Logged |

Great ideas, Kimo. I'm wondering if there's an angle having to do with ettiquette. I know some large corporations used to provide such training for their young new employees who had to interface with international or high wealth clients. IP: Logged |
