Forgive me please, for posting here as a newbie I am unable to post to the General Silver Forum. This is in regard to the Puzzling Inscription question about a spoon posted there and may be considered helpful: There is a gold rush town in the Sierra Nevada foothills country of California, that is currently a state park, known as Columbia. It's near Sonora. I too think this spoon is from a fraternal order, based on the logo and calling out of a Temple, and by number, similar to the IOOF or Shriners traditions. The front of the spoon seems to be in a poppy motif, and the engraving may be a version of the oft inscribed Golden Gate which was a popular focus for spoons around the turn of the century. Those clues seem in alignment with a California Fraternal Order. IP: Logged |

The organization seems to be the Pythian Sisters. IP: Logged |

There are places called Columbia in pretty much every state and a number in Canada as well. From what I see on Pythian Sister's website they have a large concentration in British Columbia in Canada for example. I've found references to Columbia Temple #18 based in Vancouver, B.C. so it would seem likely to me that their Columbia Temple #17 was also based in Vancouver, or nearby. Temple 18 was in Vancouver, Clark, Washington, not BC. IP: Logged |
