I have a lovely old oval tray with feet that is silverplate. The edges are quite ornately carved and there are three shields that are raised with letters and symbols inside of them. Does anyone know of a website that has an extensive free library of Silversmith's marks? I have looked at the Encyclopedia of Silver marks on the web and these marks are not shown. I live in a small rural community and do not have access to a large library where I might find a book on silver marks. Thanks for any help you can give me. IP: Logged |

Hi Gypsie! Can you post a picture or drawing of the marks? Re: Books, You might try an online search for used book sellers that may have the books you need at a reasonable price. Also, maybe your library can do an out of state request for books. Good luck. IP: Logged |

Jeanne, A few of us are working on an annotated list of books with a section for beginners. Wyler's the Book of Old Silver is relatively inexpensive as is Dorothy Rainwater's Encyclopedia of American Silver. Both are available via Amazon. Wyler offers a good introduction, but is one of the worst indexed boxes I have ever seen. I have found it a useful place to start. Others will also have suggestions. Look at the list of books under "library" on the forum home page. Tom IP: Logged |

You do not need to live near a large library. Any public library or school library can obtain pretty much whatever book you like through a process called "interlibrary loan". All you need is sufficient information on the book such as the ISBN number, or the exact title, author and publisher and you ask your local library to obtain it for you from another library on the interlibrary loan program. Alternatively, you can simply buy your own copy of one of the excellent references already mentioned and that way you will always have the information at your fingertips. This will also be an incentive to get more interested in silver and allow you to be an informed collector. IP: Logged |
