Ok I am in a dilemma of sorts. I know I need to thin out my collection but don’t have a clue where to start. My biggest problem is how to let go of something (I know it sounds like hoarding but it isn’t, at least not yet – LOL). For instances, I have 3 sets of knives (dinner, place and lunch) in my pattern but I also have an extra set of lunch knives that I can’t seem to let go. My main goal is to start upgrading what I have but I have a hard time letting go of the pieces I have. So does anyone have any tips? IP: Logged |

Just a thought, but IMHO lunch knives seem to be harder to come by. I'd keep them. They don't eat anything either. The flip side if that is do you use them? Also, what is it that you want to upgrade them for, that would financially make them a good trade off? Also, what is your pattern, I have Forgotten, that would also make a difference. Hope this helps somewhat. Jersey IP: Logged |

Well my pattern is Chantilly. The lunch knives are just one example (I had modern blades but was able to get blunts. My original goal was to buy the blunts and sell the moderns to pay for the blunts but a year later they are still here). I have quite a few bowls, candlesticks, goblets etc. that aren't really that extrordinary and I really want to up the quality of pieces in my collection. IP: Logged |

You could keep modern lunch knives, and sometimes use them instead of the blunt bladed ones and see if anyone notices. IP: Logged |

Why are you thinning your collection? Is it because you would rather spend the money you could get for the extras on other pieces (or other expenses)? Because you're running out of storage space? Because you feel silly having more knives than you use? Some other reason? If it's money, then yes, sell the luncheon knives or other pieces that you don't love or use. If it's space, well, silver doesn't take up all that much space compared to other things you could collect--are you sure you don't want to get rid of some larger objects that you love less, instead? If it's feeling silly, just keep everything. Life is too short to worry about feeling silly. That's my opinion, anyway. IP: Logged |

Just a hint. I had thought of paying for a few better pieces by selling some common spoons. After a long arduous debate with myself I decided to sell some of the common, nondescript fiddleback coin spoons. I have a ton of them. Realizing that these would not bring much as collectibles I decided to appeal to peoples greedy side. I listed them as 90% scrap silver and sold them at close to recent bullion value. No regrets as I can buy the same type spoons for a small amount and I now have my two ladles that I have been wanting. IP: Logged |

My main goal is to sell pieces to buy better pieces. But I hate the thought of letting a piece go (esp for scrap because I know they will get melted down but they aren't anything great so why I feel the need to save them - I don't know). And Talon, most people don;t notice when I mix dinner with lunch size on a table so I doubt they would notice the blades LOL. However they do love coming over for dinner because they love they way I set a mean table and serve (usually) great food! IP: Logged |

Knives do not have much silver in them and generally do not bring much as scrap. Since you have a popular pattern your knives may be worth more as knives than scrap. Certainly they may be worth more to you given your reluctance to part with them. Simply getting a price for your knives may help you decide that you should kept them and not part with something you like and could use. IP: Logged |

It is always hard to be cool and rational about a passion. Since your goal is to upgrade, my input would be to sort your entire collection into three categories – good, better, best – using criteria that are important to you (age? condition? rarity?). This might help you decide which items can be let go to make room for others that fit your better or best categories. IP: Logged |

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I think Kayvee has given me a nudge in the direction I think I need to go - just a little deeper. I plan on pulling out all of my silver and grouping it into good, better and best piles. I have a feeling when I see it all laid out in one spot that will give me my "OMG moment" for which I have been looking. IP: Logged |

Hi there Chase.. How about utility.. Usefulness.. how much do you use the piece in question. Sure the Waffle server is fun, but is it that useful compared to a lunch or dinner fork, or even a teaspoon? Something to ponder.. Marc IP: Logged |

when i see something excellent for my collection, i purchase it and subsequently sell one or two inferior items, which, in the dazzle of the new acquisition, seem even less impressive than they did already. the mere temptation to sell something from my collection instantly taints that item, for if i liked it enough, i wouldn't have considered getting rid of it in the first place.

Really? I'm sort of the opposite. I feel sorry for the poor thing, abandoned by its owner (me) and cast into the cold arms of strangers. The less I like it, the more I pity it. So here I sit, surrounded by yowling spoons scratching up the furniture. IP: Logged |
