[01-2951] I thought I would show a sequence of photos of a pasta server I made recently. It is in the Moulton pattern, and I can safely say that Paul Revere never made one. The Italians came to the North End of Boston long after his time. The handle I used is from a vegetable fork.

Here, the handle has been hammered out one third the length. The hammering of the bowl area will start after the second hammering of the handle. middletom IP: Logged |

In this photo the bowl area has been hammered out one third and the handle is at two thirds the full length. middletom IP: Logged |

I've a little correction to make here. The handle was hammered out in four stages, not three, so the previous picture had the handle at the half way point. In this photo, the handle is three quarters length and the bowl at two thirds size. middletom IP: Logged |

And, so, we have reached the full length for the handle and full size for the bowl and they have been plannished. Note I will have to do some cutting out of the fingers. middletom IP: Logged |

Here the extra silver has been trimmed so you can see the shape of the fingers. middletom IP: Logged |

The bowl is shaped with the punch from the pitcher spoon, but the fingers extend upward much farther than the full shape of the pitcher spoon. More work to be done to smooth out those fingers. middletom IP: Logged |

Once the basic shape of the bowl has been achieved, I placed the bowl upside down on top of the punch and smoothed the fingers. As they extend farther down the punch, onto the rougher part of the punch, it takes careful hammering to ge them right. middletom IP: Logged |

So, here is the final piece with the drainage pattern pierced in the bottom of the bowl. I'm sorry I don't have a picture of the polished piece. The finisher works in the evening and it was finished and packaged up before I could snap a photo. I'll be doing another one in the next few months and I'll make a point to get a picture of the polished server. middletom IP: Logged |

When I posted the other pictures I had promised to post one of the finished piece, actually another one just like the first. middletom IP: Logged |

Great pieces. Did it take the same amount of time to make each one? Also, what are the lengths and weights? [This message has been edited by Richard Kurtzman (edited 02-29-2012).] IP: Logged |

Well, the time to make them was the same for each one, but I will have to get back to you with length and weight. Scott, was that you who straightened out the picture problem? I do thank you and hope Photobucket corrects what happened, if they can. middletom IP: Logged |

middletom, I never saw an issue. The image always looked like it was sized correctly. I did remove your second attempts. I don't think anyone but you saw the issue so it most likely wasn't a photobucket issue. IP: Logged |

Scott, The picture is now smaller than when I first posted it but apparently it was only on my screen that it seemed oversized. Perhaps the problem is in my computer. Geoff IP: Logged |

How long did it take to make this piece? IP: Logged |

Richard, I have a few answers for you. The piece is about 9 1/2 inches in length and I started with 5.66 ounces of silver. It took me in the range of two hours to make it. It is an interesting piece to make. Once at the Paul Revere House in Boston, someone asked me if Paul Revere made all the pieces we make and I said I felt certain that he never made a pasta server. Of course, all around his house is now an Italian neighborhood, but in his time anything Italian was entirely unknown. middletom IP: Logged |

middletom: I just stumbled upon this post (I am a new member) and was utterly fascinated by it. Thank you for taking the time to post all these wonderful photos and to explain the process behind making this piece! I am off to see if there are any other posts like this one out there!
