I would like information on the frequency of parcel (partial) gilding on this silverwork. Any and all responses welcomed and appreciated. Thanks. IP: Logged |

I'm afraid that's rather too open a question to get much of an answer -- it really depends on which pieces of Judaica, even beyond questions of age nationality and such. For example, few of the 'spice towers' I've seen have been parcel gilt; none of the (20th century) kiddush cups I've seen have been, although I think some older ones have been; 'torah pointers' seem not uncommonly parcel gilt on the pointer end. It would be easier to give a meaningful answer if the question were more specific. Also, I see that you're a conservator at the Strong; note that I'm relatively local to you (Ithaca), so we could probably meet sometime if that might be helpful. There's also an extremely knowledgeable precious metals person in Endicott, whom you would probably be well advised to get to know if you're doing much work in this area. IP: Logged |

I'd recommend Vivian Mann's landmark publication "Crowning Glory" which focuses on Jewish ceremonial silver in The Jewish Museum in NY. Because gold and silver both have symbolic meanings that echo back through the millennia, there may be some intentionality in the presence of lack of parcel-gilding in Judaic silver. IP: Logged |

Having been in touch with RWS off list, I wanted to update here some of that conversation. I thought that some of the pieces looked to be parcel gilt, and others likely faded lacquer or possibly oil on the surface. I suggested that a soapy wash should take care of any oil without causing problems, but that lacquer posed more of a challenge; possibly a chemical solvent might be used to remove it safely? And then a non-abrasive polish might be used carefully. I also suggested two books: Jay Weinstein's A Collector's Guide to Judaica, 1985, and Abram Kanof's Jewish Ceremonial Art and Religious Observance, 1969, both of which I have and have found very useful.
