Hi All, Was wondering about a safe storage method, other than pacific cloth, for the storage and inventory of spoons? Any organizational hints and/or display ideas as well would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! IP: Logged |

Polyethelene ziploc bags are great for flatware--keep the air out and don't damage the silver. Avoid polyvinyl chloride (Saran wrap, anything clingy) which will corrode silver. Our Museum uses such bags to protect recently cleaned silver while in storage. IP: Logged |

All we ever write on our bags is our accession number...and we find the slightly heavier freezer ziploc bags are best, and they also have a white patch on them that makes labeling easier... IP: Logged |

I have started using the regular sandwich ziploc bags for smaller items in their original boxes and use a stick-on lable that I have printed the info I need so I know whats in each box quickly. Just curious: should I use the labels or not? I hadn't thought about the lable adhesive "seeping" (for lack of a better term) through the bag until now and wonder if it could damage whats inside the bag. I've found that freezer bags keep air away from food and keep moisture inside much better than sandwich bags. (For example, brown sugar dries out quickly in a sandwich bag, but lasts a long time in a freezer bag.) So I assumed freezer bags would keep silver from tarnishing for longer. However, I have lots of spoons in sandwich bags anyway (laziness), and it doesn't seem to have made much difference so far. But make sure you don't use the kind of bags that have a plastic slider to zip them. Those things leak air like crazy. IP: Logged |

Aha! Thank you, Polly, for solving a mystery. I've used ziplocks, but have been disappointed to sometimes see more tarnish than I would have expected. I'll bet it's due to the sliders.....Too bad. They're very handy. IP: Logged |
