Well, it certainly has been a long time since I have posted at Silver Salon! I was once very much involved in silver research and collection, but have since moved on to (sadly?) more lucrative fields of work. Currently I tend bar in New Orleans, where the craft cocktail movement is slowly but surely developing, taking its cue from historic mixological advice from the mid-19th century and on. I have lately wondered about what place silver, sterling or otherwise (.90, .875, etc.), has in the bartender's toolbox. I recall occasionally seeing a few items, cocktail shakers and the like, cropping up in my previous line of work, but usually they were rather ordinary, and at times "chintzy". Has anyone come across truly exceptional bar ware? This would include bar spoons, cocktail strainers (both Hawthorne and Julep), shakers, etc. I would love to know!

The Arts & Crafts era is rich with tasty barware. I have a 1/2, 1 and 2 jigger set by Porter Blanchard found years ago at a church sale. My uncle has a splendid shaker set by Kalo that he still uses for his (now weekly) martini. Absinthe spoons are a collection in themselves.

There are a ton of sterling items, mainly from the 40s-60s. Gorham made a martini spike which is pretty cool as well as a stop-light jigger among other items. Towle and Reed & Barton made bar sets that are neat.

Another thing ... the antique skirt lifter has been re-purposed as a bar towel holder.
