Can anyone say whether there are antique Puerto Rican silver/silversmiths? Are there any good places (antiques first then restaurants ) to checkout in San Juan? IP: Logged |

I do not have an answer and hopefully someonw will, but they were a Spanish colony until 1898. I would guess that there must have been at least a few silver smiths working there up until that time and perhaps their markings were those of Spain? Hopefully you might be able to find something interesting, but my guess is if you do you may need to be prepared to pay a significant price. I say this because I have known several well to do people from Puerto Rico and my impression of all of them is they all take tremendous pride in their heritage and history and as a result were very avid collectors of Puerto Rican antiques and art - to put it mildly. Scott, I've not been there for many years but as I recall there are a number of good restaurants in Old San Juan. Plus, it is very picturesque. I would not be surprised if there were shops with antique silver. Geoff IP: Logged |

Scott, When are you planning to go to Puero Rico? I ask because one of my brothers has lived down there for fifty years and if you haven't gone yet, I may be able to ask him for some information that could help you out. Geoff IP: Logged |

Thanks Geoff. We are back. We didn't see anything worth mentioning. IP: Logged |

Was anyone there able to tell you about what the old markings were? IP: Logged |

We were there for non Silver business, so we didn't have to opportunity to do much inquiring. The very limited input we got was that if there is antique silver to be found it is most likely foreign and/or faux Spanish artifacts. IP: Logged |
