[01-3001] Hi all - found 3 sifters from Equist, Carl Gustav, a silversmith working in St. Petersburg about 1850. What a joy to use them.

How wonderful! I have a very similar implement, with a pear-shaped bowl and a twig handle, with the mark of Martin Mayer of Mainz, which I bought from Richard a couple of years ago--he believed it was a tea strainer. But the holes are a little too small for that. Surface tension makes the tea stay in the bowl for much longer than you'd expect. I will try using it as a sugar sifter instead. I'll post photos tomorrow after the sun comes out. IP: Logged |

Hi - The firm Martin Mayer in Mainz, founded 1888, is wellknown for its quality. They produced designs by Peter Behrens, Hans Christiansen and Patriz Huber.
I think these apple- or pear-twig shaped sifters were just a mode of that time - you can find them in many countries, starting in France. Regards IP: Logged |

Thank you, Postnikov. What sort of fruit is the bowl of the sifter in the far right? Is it a chestnut? Some other kind of nut? IP: Logged |

I can only guess: chestnut or walnut. Regards IP: Logged |

I'd guess a cabbage leaf. IP: Logged |
