[01-3008] I am posting a picture of a goblet that has been 38 years in the making. I'm not kidding about that.
I started this many years ago to try to teach myself some holloware raising techniques. The cup comes from a baby cup that was mangled by the spinner and went into scrap. I retrieved it and changed its shape, flared the top and fluted the sides. I made the base from a small circle of silver. The stem originally was a piece of mahogany, but I never really cared for it. S couple years ago I reshaped the base then this past week I decided to make a new stem from purple heart wood. When that was done I thought of wood crafts people who often use layers of different colored woods to make an item interesting. As I have a number of colored woods I have bought or scrounged, I assembled several pieces slightly offset from one another, then ground the stem from that on a sanding belt, giving the slant to the various layers. I think the goblet finally looks the way it should have many years ago. middletom IP: Logged |

What an interesting piece - and story. Can you please tell how you have attached the base and bowl to the stem? IP: Logged |

Jersey, What urged me on was that I had some spare time at work, had finished the book I'd been reading at lunch, and just decided to make the goblet right, finally. The inspiration for the stem just came out of the blue because I did not get excited about the stem I made from purple heart wood. It is not for sale. I have presented it to my wife so that when she is in the mood for a glass of wine, she has a boblet from which to drink it. David, I attached the stem to the base and goblet with small pieces of brass rod extending up into the stem a short distance then used clear epoxy to hold it all together. Thank you both for your kind words. middletom IP: Logged |
