(This post could be considered an extension of ‘Collapsible Cups’.)

I was quite surprised to find that this collapsible cup seems to have been sold as a piece for taking to the WW 1 battlefield. It is hallmarked ‘Birmingham 1914’. The leather case has an Officer’s name inked on the inside but I can only make out the rank, ‘Captain’. The stud for holding down the flap appears to have been burned off somehow and one cannot help wondering about the possible fate of the original owner. The case has a loop at the back for attaching to a belt.

Although this cup has the English Gorham maker’s mark, the same cup and case were also marketed by Asprey.

The advertisement is also from 1914.

Is anyone aware of any other silver ‘battlefield’ items?

Ian

I really love the Hygienic Pocket Filter! There was a lot of battleship silver service created. Will try to find some of the documentation to share.

Here is a match box / vesta / match safe called 'The Trench', belonging to a friend. This was again made by Gorham. Maybe Gorham in England were the only manufacturer producing this kind of item...?

The advertisement is from 1916.

Trench Art may be a good source for battlefield silver. For example, this cup which was made from a military shell and silver plated:

The cup is approximately 2 " tall and 4 1/2" between the handles.

Scott - I find your engraved coins intriguing. I presume each of the two outer coins were worn by one partner of a relationship. Do you happen to know any of the history of these pieces? Are they Americans? My knowledge of WW1 military uniforms is poor....

I also thought they were intriguing.

I don't know anything factual.

I speculate there may be a "Dear John" somewhere in the history.

My made up story....

  • An English soldier in France during WW1.
  • Self portrait
  • Best Girl and best War Buddy portrait.
  • The opportunity to present them to The Gal and Buddy never occurred.
  • He hung on to them and returned to the UK.
  • They became a treasured war memento.

On first glance I would think the large one a memorial medallion. The ones with two holes would imply they were to be worn around the neck, wrist, or ankle of a young soldier and his girl, made before he went off to war.
