Above are two small silver plate bowls that were sold by the Peter Orr Company in India. I do not know if they were only a retailer or if the also manufactured some of their merchandise. I posted this because of the interesting mark that is clearly engraved with a free hand. Considering the naïve lettering, I think that the engraver was either lucky to have room for all the letters or was more adept than is immediately apparent. It does seem unusual for a silver plated item to have an engraved retailer’s name, but perhaps this was one way engravers learned their craft. The bowls are very nice silver plate; evidence that India produced excellent quality silver plated items at one time. IP: Logged |

Vidya Dehejia gave a wonderful lecture a couple of years ago on Indian Silver during the British Raj (Crown rule of India from 1858 to 1947)to the New York Silver Society. There is an accompanying book that is beautiful. IP: Logged |
