The above cups are some finds from the Nashville Flea market this weekend. They are cups made from horn. Sometimes silver is used to decorate the rim; as in the tall cup and sometimes a silver decoration is applied to the outside surface. The cup next to the tall one has an applied heart made from silver and a handle that is either painted or made from copper. The two cups on the left are without any decoration and this type seems to be popular with country collectors. The cups always seem to hold water and to be made by a skilled hand. I really do not know how to identify the horns that were used in making these cups or when they were made. IP: Logged |

Glad to hear a nice flea market is not going under like so many others have. I think the big internet auction sites have taken a lot of the wind out of such enterprises both because of the ease of browsing things and the much lower prices you typically can get. The nice thing about the big flea markets though is you get to touch things and every once in a while buy things for slightly less than on line since you don't get as much competition and every once in a while a dealer will price something for less than double its value. Your cups appear to be cow and steer horns but as I am not a cow and steer expert I could not be sure which might come from which kinds of cows and steers. Dating these things is pretty much impossible as they are not hard to make. The one way to get a good fix would be to examine any silver or other metal fittings, but even that is hit or miss unless there are hallmarks or other features that give it a clear date since there is typically so little silver or other metal used. It is hard to place a date by style on a simple rim. Medallions can be added anytime so those of of limited use as well. These kinds of cups could be 300 years old or 30 years old or anywhere in between. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the information Kimo. I just thought these cups were attractive and cups like these really were used in times past. I rarely buy antiques on the internet as I like to talk to dealers too much. There is much more excitement at real show where a certain amount of randomness adds to fun. Another good thing about shows is you get to have the fun of bartering. Some dealers don't do it or give you attitude, but most are great folks and enjoy the art of the haggle and if you are talented at it you can sometimes get decent prices from them, but you have to be careful about their wares as many of them heavily pad their stocks with modern things made to look old. It is very much a case of buyer beware and take everything a dealer says with a whole saltshaker full of salt. IP: Logged |

I'm elated to find the Nashville flea market is doing well. I haven't been in years since I wasn't finding much but new stuff. It seems I need to plan a visit! IP: Logged |

October is the big month at this show as more dealers set up and there are more people looking. Set up day is Thursday and you can go in that day. We drop by late afternoon on Thursday and then return on Friday morning. It is not like Scott's in Atlanta, but there really are many good dealers. This show is the fourth full weekend of each month, except Dec it is the third full weekend. IP: Logged |
