I suspect I'm seeing a hallmark that's identifying the pieces as 900 silverplate, maybe. Please tell me what you think.

Thanks,
Cyn

Thank you Scott. I'm believe I see a decimal point in front of that 90, I hope.

Hi Cyn,

The "900" is a quality mark. 90% silver.

The other mark.. I do not know..

Normally a silver mark is quiet clear for those who know. Mark that point i 2 different directions are normally mark set to confuse. So people belief that plate is silver.

In this case I have no idea whether silver or plate.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed their opinion to this post. It was checked by the jeweler and it is 900 silver.

How did the jeweler check it? If he or she did an acid test those are quite unreliable since all they tell you is what is on the surface and not what is inside. If they did a specific gravity test that is more reliable though it is more complicated and not all jewelers have the equipment or know-how to do it.

Do you know how your jeweler tested this? If he or she did a simple acid test, those are quite unreliable and will only tell what metal is on the surface. To tell if something is solid silver one needs to do a specific gravity test which not all jewelers know how to do or have the equipment to do.

The marking on this is quite odd. The 900 would normally indicate solid 900 silver which is an alloy of 90% silver and 10% other metals, but the 90 marking is one that is commonly seen on silver plate where the 90 indicates a relative thickness of silver plating equal to 90 grams of silver plating 24 spoons or forks or the equivalent amount of hollowware.

Actually it looks like it is marked ".90".
It was a damaged piece I sold for scrap. The jeweler paid me a good price for it so I'm happy.

Hi Cyn. If your intent of your posting was to gather pre-sales information whether for selling this or just for selling it for scrap, please remember that this is not the place to do so.

Hi Cyn,

You've been a long time member; since 2002.

A quick review of your past posts shows that you bumped into the Guidelines before.

The Guidelines are subject to change and since you don't post that often I suggest you give the Guidelines a read again. Especially before your next post.

Thanks

Honestly, I was hoping not to scrap the bowl, but it was missing a figural decorative piece.

Even my silversmith had no hope for it...
    "Hello Cynthia,
Scrapping. I know, it bothers me as well.
No silversmith will have a cupid to top this stand. I honestly don't know what to suggest that won't cost two arms, two legs, a couple of cats and a dog.
    Seriously.
    J. H."
I spent a couple of weeks looking for something that I could substitute for it. I did buy a silver cherub charm but it was too small. It was then I gave up, long after I posted here. Remember, innocent before proven guilty my friends!
