    Great faces in silver #6

From time to time great faces show up in silver and silverplate. We thought it would be fun to start a thread where we post photos of great silver faces.

Vathek, that last face is so dark and menacing and the lighting in the photo is perfect!

A few more from our wanderings at the Miami Shows.
(note: we didn't inspect these so it is the dealer who is saying they are made in silver.)

There were two. Both identical. Together they both occupied a table top. They were set out head to tail, so they were chasing each other. You can see the lips of the second one in the right edge if the photo.

My best recollection is that they were large, perhaps 18 inches to 20 inches.

I suspect they were center pieces. And since the containers were vermeil, they could have been used for almost anything.

That owl is just wonderful - any information on him?

Figureheads from Scandinavian Viking ship salts:

Souvenir spoon Vikings - two at top are early 1890s American 'Leif Ericson' spoons, Gorham for Daniel Low (Anne Whitney's famous statues in Boston & Milwaukee at top) and a more fierce Leif by Towle; the others are Norwegian, the two lower left are .830 silver by Lohne Bros. and Gustav Hellstrøm; the two lower right are silverplate by Th. Marthinsen:

I don't know anything about the owl. At the show it was in a case with other silver. The seller said it was silver but was busy with a real customer and only had time to say I could photograph it.

From a silverplated dish with no markings. I'm so glad I finally got the picture to come out the right size!

Cleopatra Selene silver bust

Emblema of Cleopatra Selene, Roman, parcel gilt silver, circa late 1st Century B.C./early 1st Century A.D., 6 7/8 inches high

The Roman Parcel Gilt Silver Emblema of Cleopatra Selene was created within a few decades of the birth of Christ.

Raised from a single sheet, it is superbly sculpted in high relief in the form of the bust of a young woman wearing an elephant headdress over the top of her head. The raised trunk and tapering tusks project forward. All of these were separately made and inserted.

The skin of the beast is crosshatched, and each diamond is carefully punctuated by a central dot, and its broad ears sweep along her neck.

Scott: I have to wonder in what circumstances the Punch creamer (and matching set?) would have been used. It's hard to imagine that being used in the context of Downton or some dour member of the Prussian military aristocracy trotting that out at a dinner party.

I haven't a clue but the caricature is great... it sort of reminds me of a bearded Jimmy Durante. Perhaps it was used when entertaining the Proletariat?

A find last month in Brimfield; this face was added on to an English sterling serving spoon converted to a berry spoon, London 1800. The face and the other additional engraving added are quite rough, and it's not something I would normally pick up, but I couldn't resist the face!
