I broke down and bought a new camera a while ago, a Nikon D5200 and also a Tamron 90mm macro lens. I have been testing various setups for shooting silver. Marks are no real problem, but swaged backs take a bit of fiddling because of the shallow depth of field. I have been getting pretty good results using the image stacking function in Photoshop. Here is a straight shot of a Myers bird-back:
As can be seen, focus drops off as the bowl curves back at top and bottom. To compensate, I shot three images, adjusting the focus slightly with each. I opened them in Photoshop and and ran the stacking script at default. I identified the in focus areas of each and then built a merged image:
It's certainly not perfect, but better than the first, I think. When I get my shooting table set up, I'll be able to run the camera through my computer and precisely control the focal plane and number of stack images. Looks like I'm going to have to dig out all my spoons again. . . IP: Logged |

Looks good. I'm still using a snapshot camera so I am feeling a bit envious. More than a year ago I was considering a tethered digital SLR.... I have been waiting for sales to pick up.... Last week June told me I should get it for xmas; so hearing your advice/experience would be appreciated. IP: Logged |
