Does anyone do artful hand engraving anymore? I belong to a club that is running out of engraving space on some of its old trophies, and am trying to suggest some solutions. Some of the trophies already have bases, and adding new ones would not be appropriate. There is no will to spend a lot of money on commissioned silver presentation pieces. I'm not crazy about all the typical production trophy things out there, which don't stand up to the quality and character of what we have. But I wonder, for example, if we could find high-quality, large sterling frames with wide borders, if it would be possible to find a talented engraver who might be able to provide custom, artful engravings for the awards on the frames that would be respectful of the original trophies. I am imagining that we could somehow then insert a piece of sheet sterling where the glass would usually fit, which would then continue with the names of award winners as they are added over the years. Is this nuts? Feasible? Expensive? And if the answers indicate I'm not off the wall on this, finding someone in New England would be wonderful. IP: Logged |

Many thanks, Scott! Beth Perry looks like a great resource. (Would still be interested in any thoughts from other forum members.) And I'm fascinated by the Airgraver link. Here I thought this would be a lost art...didn't think about the gun engraving industry. IP: Logged |

Bob Rosser is an engraver we have used for children's silver cups. [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 11-03-2013).] IP: Logged |

The Stanley Cup for Hockey has had additional rings added to the base to create more room for engravings. Does the trophy you mention lend itself to having its base enlarged by adding more material or additional plinths to create more places to engrave? IP: Logged |

Hello seaduck! Just a thought but perhaps if you could show us an example of the trophy you wish to add too we might have a better idea of a design to add to (it, them). Thanks Jersey IP: Logged |

Thank you, everyone, for your interest in this and for your good thoughts! There are several trophies -- some are run-of-the-mill engraved trays, but there are some rather splashy old trophies. My sense is that the we would not want to alter the more significant ones. I don't have pix at the moment, but I have requested them. If I get some, I'll try to post them. (However we're best doing that these days.) It turns out that the club has in fact been using Beth Perry for engraving new award winners each year, so we will consult with her more on some options. (Thank you again, Scott -- it's good to have your input on that.) Will keep you posted! IP: Logged |
