Hi, Does anyone know what this is? I'm very curious as to it's origin and purpose and would appreciate some input. I don't know if it's silver or not, but it's a fairly soft metal and very bendable. I purchased it at a second hand store and I'm assuming someone was a collector as they had 10 or so in a basket, all different designs. They all had a small loop in the same area (as you see in the photo the loop where the dragons mouth is.) There is a mark just above the loop, but it's so tiny i couldn't possibly photograph it. It's a bull's head with circled c below it. Also, I should mention this is approximately the same size as a piece of flatware. Thank you.
I'm not a collector of silver, I just admire the craftsmanship and history of old things, therefore collect various items, always buying what I like, not what I think is valuable. My intention is not to sell any of my possessions, I'm not that desperate yet The reason for my post is simply to find out what this is. My curiosity is getting the best of me, I spent approximately three hours scouring the internet to solve this mystery but to no avail. I'm hoping someone on this website can offer me an answer. I bought the item to use as a bookmark and it's serves that purpose wonderfully, but every time I look at it, I'm a little consumed with wonder...what is this thing? Thanks again. IP: Logged |

The little loop at the end would be for something like a small colorful tassle or a little charm. Several bookstores in my area sell bookmarks like this at their checkout counters for impulse buys. They are usually made of brass with a plating of a silver colored metal or of a pewter alloy which is what your nice little dragon looks like to me. It does not likely have much age to it, but I think it is a nicely designed one and that it would be a very practical object to use on an everyday basis. If you do an internet search for pewter dragon bookmark or some similar combination of words you should be able to find a number of versions of yours along with some ideas for the kind of tassle/charm you might like to add to yours. The design for this is based on Viking art. Dragons of this type were frequently the front and back posts on ships used in raiding. Sometimes Viking ships were called Dragon ships. What else do you have that is silver like? IP: Logged |

Thank you all for your responses. Kimo, I did exactly as you said, a simple google search of a pewter dragon bookmark and there they were! So simple, I wasn't expecting it to be what I intended to use it for! Sometimes the simplest answer IS the answer. I feel so much better now along with a little stupid. I don't frequent book stores, most of the books I read I get second hand, so I've never seen these. Anyway, I had fun with it, I brought it to work and announced that the first person who could tell me what it is I'd buy them lunch..it was fun listening to all the ideas, everyone was curious but the result was no one knew the answer, so that makes me feel better I do have other silver and silver plate items. I have an old Forbes Silver Co silver plate piece that I use as a candy dish, and I have a Dekor Feinsilber silver luster sugar bowl and creamer, but that's pretty much it. I did discover a wonderful world of silver items while I was searching the internet, and it just might have ignited something inside of me This little quest was fun, and it definitely renewed my interest in seeking unique items. Thank you so much for your help! IP: Logged |

Half of the fun of collecting silver and silver colored objects is finding out about them through personal research and talking with others. It is a great hobby. IP: Logged |
