Hello, I am a new user to this forum (as of today). I am looking for a nice vintage silver "cigarette" case to give my sister for her birthday in November. I intend for her to use it as a small wallet, to hold a credit card on one side and a folded dollar bill or two on the other--so it would have to be larger than a business card case. I would like to have it engraved, so I would prefer something very simple with little or no ornamentation and no previous monogram if possible. Does such a thing exist? I am just beginning to learn about silver card cases and just beginning my search (a little late, I fear); can anyone point me in the right direction (specifically)? Thank you! IP: Logged |

Thanks, pjb! Such a thing definitely exists. It might be a bit harder to find one without a monogram, but you should be able to if you look. I found my various card cases on ebay, at flea markets, and in thrift shops. Antique shows, antique stores, and charity auctions are another good place to look. There are also online websites for antique dealers. (The Gorham case you ask about was from ebay; that sort of outline is not uncommon among mid-19th century card cases.) You can find cigarette cases in the same sorts of places as card cases. Nice cigarette cases were made well into the 20th century, and are probably still being made. IP: Logged |

Hello PJB! Welcome to the forum! Sterling Silver cigarette cases are readily available. I've seen them at antique dealers, silver shops, antique shows, flea markets, auctions. Most of the plain ones are very affordable. When you get into the more elaborate ones, or ones with top-notch names then it becomes more costly. Jersey IP: Logged |

From one new member to another...Hello! I have used my grandfather's cigarette case as a wallet for years. Most card cases are so small that they don't hold more than a few cards. Cigarette cases have deeper sides and often have straps that originally held the cigarettes in place. Those straps come in handy when using the cases as wallets. Good luck finding the perfect one for your sister. It's a great birthday gift in my opinion. Wicca IP: Logged |

There are also the somewhat larger cigar cases, which would work for your sister's credit cards. There is also a cosmetic case, for want of a better name. On one side would be a compartment for face powder and a compartement for a powder puff. The other side holds a mirror. Forget what they are called, but they do exist in many sizes. Happy hunting. The powder and mirrow cases are called compacts. They were very popular from the 1920s to the 1940s and often are found in sterling with beautiful enamelling. While they are usually circular in shape you can clean out any powder residues and use them for cards or money, and the built in mirror is a nice thing to have as well. If you need something immediately, you should visit your local antique dealers. If you have time you can go to estate sales, antique shows, the online auction sites, online dealers, etc. IP: Logged |

As an aside.......I found one for my husband with his initials at an auction that no one wanted because of the initials. I have my wonderful Dad's, a gift to him from a close friend, put safely away since it's 14k. Don't want to loose that one, ever! Jersey IP: Logged |
