Thank you Scott-wasn't sure how to search the site for this piece. Jersey, I do not know the maker; it is marked 1ER TITRE, which I understand to be a French silverplate mark, but there is no maker's mark. Not sure how often I will use it for aspic, but I may well have to try it on ice cream-or maybe a Bundt cake! IP: Logged |

Looks very much like the Ercuis 'Contours No. 7' pattern, though they threatened prosecution if copied - a serpe à glaces (ice cream sickle) is offered in the second column. ~Cheryl 1911: IP: Logged |

Hello again Doc, Thank you for your info. I'd like to add though if I'm not mistaken the French silver mark you refer to is equal to 950. That would certainly make it sterling +. Have fun with you slicer! Jersey IP: Logged |

Jersey, you are right, which makes the find all the more exciting! Cheryl, thank you-it does look like the same pattern. IP: Logged |

The French are rather picky about hallmarking solid silver - so far as I know, '1ER TITRE' was sometimes stamped on silverplate, indicating that it was 'First or Premium Quality'. Perhaps there is some confusion because the French silver standards are referred to as '1er titre' (1st quality/.950, later .925) and '2d titre' (2nd quality/.800). ~Cheryl [This message has been edited by dragonflywink (edited 05-13-2014).] IP: Logged |
