I wonder if anyone has any ideas as to what would cause the peculiar discoloration shown in the photo below.

This is a centerpiece, circa 1910, that was presented as a yacht club trophy. The discoloration is not typical tarnish -- it is hard-edged, and the club staff has been unable to polish it. (Hence the paper taped to the bottom -- a sad attempt to cover the damage!) Any suggestions on how to restore this?

Here's a photo (my first trial of the new hosting service!):

Not to worry... Two problems
1. your closing img tag was missing the / it should have been [/img]
2. the image url you used was for the thumbnail. For the larger image use the gallery view:

Hi Scott--
Thanks for the photo fixits!

The piece is marked "sterling" -- Black Starr & Frost, New York. Here's a photo of the marks on the underside (another attempt to get this right!).

Could it be the remnants of an old lacquer coating? Have you tried acetone/fingernail polish remover?

You might also try soaking it in vinegar in case it is a mineral deposit.

Old lacquer would be my guess too.

Two excellent suggestions! Maybe I'll start with the acetone, unless you suggest otherwise.

Ahwt: Do you have any idea how long I would need to soak it? Or how long it might take to know that it might work? And would vinegar otherwise affect the finish?

I'll see if I can borrow it from the club this week to experiment. Will report back.

I soak things overnight in vinegar and polish them the next day. Vinegar won't remove varnish and I would try a varnish remover first.
