A friend of mine told me that he uses dental floss to tighten the swinging arms of his silver baskets. He used the very narrow type and inserted only half way around the hinge. I suppose if the arm was really loose one could wrap the floss completely around. It seems to be a perfect solution as the swinging arm still moved, but did stay in the upright position if desired. Has anyone else tried this? IP: Logged |

I have heard it and have used it. I recommend using wax floss. And for a nice fragrance use spearmint floss. IP: Logged |

Sounds like an inexpensive and workable fix, though on a more valuable object I might take it to a silversmith to put it back to rights. Have you or anyone you have heard of tried a bit of polytetrafluoroethylene (PFTE) tape? Sometimes it is called plumber's tape or Teflon tape. It is very stretchy and its most common use is by plumbers who wrap it three times around threaded fittings before screwing them together. The reason I mention this is that it is a very thin layer of Teflon that conforms to the shape of anything around which you wrap it, and then it never dries out providing a Teflon smooth lubricant/seal. Just a thought that may or may not work, but the never drying out part and being a permanent lubricant to allow silky smooth movement of the handle might be an advantage over floss. IP: Logged |

Kimo, I hadn't thought of using Teflon tape for something like this. I have used Teflon tape for often, for both plumbing and other things. For some reason the idea of putting Teflon tape to use for tightening a rotating handle never crossed my mind. I think it is a great idea and look forward to trying it. I think it will be especially good when the exterior opening is very narrow because Teflon tape is so much thinner than floss. Thanks for the idea. IP: Logged |
