Beautiful!

What is the wood on the handles? Rosewood? And (thinking of another thread with a question of how to care for wood handles on old teapots): how did you finish it?

The wood of the handles is cocobolo (spelling?). I know Kimo corrected me on the spelling of that wood at one time, but I've forgotten what it is.
I did not make the handles for I have no way of turning wood of that size, but I believe they were treated by the man who made them. I put a coat of Minwax on them. Now, you realize these are for display only so they should not get wet.

Yes, you have the spelling correct - it is cocobolo which is one of over a dozen common names used for this wood. The common name changes by country and region, and sometimes it is given for wood that is completely unrelated. Some other common names people use for this wood are granadillo or Nicaraguan rosewood or Palisander or etc. Because common names are used so loosely by wood sellers and there are no standards or laws for using them one is never sure exactly what kind of wood it really is. So, if you wnat to know that you actually have some real cocobolo the best name is not the common name but rather the botanical name which in this case would be Dalbergia retusa. Dalbergia is the Genus for the rosewoods and retusa is the specific species of this kind of rosewood. It is the most commonly found rosewood species in central America and southern Mexico and it is used widely in wood turnings, rifle stocks, musical instruments, salad bowls, etc. It is a beautiful wood.

One should be very careful when working with this wood since the sawdust and oils that are released while working it can create allergic reactions in many people - especially when such wood workers are making many objects out of this wood over time and are cutting and sanding it and breathing in the dust and getting the oils on their skin over time. Once it is in final finished form and is sealed with a coating of varnish or something on it there is no concern about the possible allegic reactions.

Thank you, Kimo, for that information. The handles were made a few years ago by Steve Brown who is an instructor in fine furniture making at the North Bennett Street school in Boston. At that time we had offered a version of the trowel I made here, but sold very few. We kept the handles so when my friend wanted something special for his wife I had the handles handy.
I'm sure Steve Brown knew of the precautions to take when turning that wood.
