Hello, all! I have just received a set of flatware. Most is marked "Heirloom Sterling" and some also says "Damask Rose", though all have the same pattern. Does "heirloom sterling" mean something different from "sterling"? The pieces feel lighter than I imagined. [please move this to a more appropriate topic, as I didn't know if it was right for American Silver post-1850 or not]. Many thanks for any input! I'll post pics shortly. IP: Logged |

"Heirloom sterling" just means sterling. The "heirloom" is marketing. IP: Logged |

As I've grown older, I've really come to appreciate Damask Rose. Oneida made some very beautiful patterns, and Damask Rose was popular as long as they made sterling flatware. "Heirloom" is one of Oneida's trade names used on their sterling. Others that I know of are "Oneida" and "Oneida Community". It seems to me that Heirloom was their premium line. I've only seen Oneida on two patterns, both of which seem to have been "Heirloom" originally and were later distributed as premiums for a margarine brand; I assume they may have been rebranded Oneida at that time. Thanks, Polly and taloncrest! That info is very helpful. There's an unusual piece that has a sterling handle that ends in a clearly non-sterling ladle bowl. The transition is seamless. The pieces aren't very tarnished at all. I've taken some photos so I'll try to upload them now. IP: Logged |

The different markings suggest that the set was likely put together over time as most sets of silver flatware were and still are. IP: Logged |
