The original forum UBB code was purchased in 1999 and was last updated late in 2000. (The following history is from memory and may not include all details.)

Between 1999 and 2000 we applied numerous upgrades and fixes. Each time the fixes/upgrade would fix one thing and then break something else (creating lots of non-silver work for us). So in late 2000, we stopped the upgrades/fixes and made the release we had work fairly stably. Soon the developers obsoleted their exiting code in favor of new and different code. After looking at their new different code, it was apparent it had more features but also had a lot of bugs and it would be a long time before there would be a truly stable release (and it cost more money); so we decided to wait for them to declare/produce a stable release.

A truly stable release with an easy upgrade path never fully materialized and then the developers obsoleted their new current code in favor of a "in the cloud" solution which didn't support an upgrade from our existing release. .......

Their original code was sloppy when it came to adhering to HTML standards. In the early days, browser's were very forgiving about HTML standards so the bad coding worked. But as new browsers were released the forums would break. We have been able to fix the HTML mistakes and incompatibly so the forums have continued.

Even with the above corrections there remains much in the code that isn't complaint with the HTML standards. ......... eek

For the past several days I have made a lot of corrections to many of the broad base of HTML errors in the original developer's code.

It may just be my imagination but I feel this has greatly speed up the page loading on the dynamically built pages (i.e., the list of threads for any forum).

I've done my best to be careful and conservative in my corrections so as to not introduce additional errors. If you see any questionable things, please document and let me know.

There are a lot more of the original developers errors to correct but the path ways to a proper error free correction isn't completely obvious. So there will have to be more reverse engineering study and tests before any more corrections are made.

It would be very helpful to know if anyone has done their own (in depth?) testing and the results.

I just made a fair number of corrections to the original code. The changes, although numerous, I don't expect will break anything unless I fat fingered something.

If you see a problem Please let me know.

I think I have made 95% of the corrections that could be made to the CGI/HTML portions of the original code.

The last 5% will require my learning and getting comfortable withe the Perl programming language.

Is there anyone here that knows Perl???

I have a bunch of other unfortunate distractions ...... so I am going to put the rest of this project off until there is a known issue or time permits.

Let me know if anyone detects something that might be an issue.
