As this video shows engine turned potterywas common in the 18th century. I think of this decoration on silver mugs and pitchers as popular in the 1850s and later, but it may have been used much earlier. Does anyone know when it started being used on silver pitchers or cups? The same machine used to decorate pottery may also have been used on silver objects with perhaps just a change in the cutting tool. Has anyone seen a video showing the process on silver? IP: Logged |

I've wondered about this, too. I hope someone will chime in with an explanation. IP: Logged |

Thanks Scott for finding that older thread. I had forgotten about the article in Chipstone and it was nice to read it again. Don Carpentier was an extraordinary potter and died much too early in his life. He also made Whieldon like plates that have what looks to me like an engine turning design that is pressed in.
