This morning, for a few minutes, I poked around the Internet looking for what contemporary silver is being mass marketed. Besides flatware, holloware, jewellery and picture frames, I stumbled upon these drawer pulls: Might you have anything to add? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm curious how one can plate sterling silver onto pewter. With electroplating the silver and copper of the sterling would separate. Geoff Blake IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ya I was wondering the same. Maybe its because sterling sounds better than .999 silver plate. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Have been seeing 'Sterling Silver Plate/Plated' in advertising and labeling since at least the '70s, always found it a bit irksome, and am sure it was just to get the 'sterling' in there. Still see it quite a bit, most often on jewelry findings (not to mention in online sales descriptions)... Do like the handles and knobs, though have to wonder exactly what the '9 step hand crafted process' consists of, and what does 'hand relieved and aged to museum quality' even mean? ~Cheryl [This message has been edited by dragonflywink (edited 06-29-2016).] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It would be nice if someone was still making Old Sheffield Plate as they really did use sterling silver over copper. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I am certainly not an expert, but I understand that there are a number of ways to plate an object these days. One of them is called sputter deposition which is a kind of vapor deposition and it is not only possible but somewhat typical to use this process to deposit metal compounds and not just single metal elements. Does anyone know of any experts in this who might be able to tell us whether this process could be use/is being used to plate objects with sterling silver which is a compound? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Youtube has some info. If I understand it correctly, based on one of the below videos, sputtering will cause coating with contaminates. So I expect you could use sterling and have the copper coat with the silver. I also expect process is too expense to be use for the knobs. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks, Scott. Do you know how they get the metal platings on plastic and such? For example, cheap plumbing fixtures are metal plated plastic, or those sunglasses with the iridescent purple or orange or whatever color lenses are metal coatings on plastic or sometimes glass, or some wrapping materials such as those to preserve food are metal coated thin plastic wrap. Whatever the process it must be inexpensive. IP: Logged |
