It's a honor to tell the Silver SMP Forum that my first (I think American) silver plated item is bought. Like the title it's a wine taster and I think a PR (public relation) item/gift. Special made for people who have bought a special article. It's easy for use and good thought to make these one's. When I have looked at internet a have read somewhere that the quantity of production of these kind of wine tasters was not enough, some people still searching for certain wine taster. I have cleaned it and don't will use it personally, but like the pattern. If someone recognize this one or has also one is it possible to describe the two little marks (in the handle).

I can't make a photo of them because the marks are not clear enough and is it possible by somebody to explain these two marks.

Thanks a lot and greetings Silverhunter.

The name for a wine taster like this one is a tastevin.

What I find strange about this tastevin is the logo on the handle is the trademark of the Hoover Vacuum Cleaner Company. I think you are correct that this would have been a gift from the company to its customers - probably for anyone who bought a vacuum cleaner. What I find odd is I can not think of a reason why the Hoover Company would have chosen a tastevin for a gift to its customers since I can think of no logical relationship between a tastevin and a vacuum cleaner, except perhaps to try to imply that their vacuum cleaners were used by people who had good taste?

Kimo,

I know the mark H..... but I didn't knew that they also made wine coolers, if you visit the website you will/can find some of them. Perhaps there will be a (snip)correction. In my opinion that would be the link for to give a gift like this silver wine taster, like it is also named by the same website.

I didn't knew the other name so I used the name of H..... advertising, perhaps you can correct them also?

Greetings Silverhunter!

Perhaps somebody can tell me something about the marks on the wine taster?

Thanks a lot!

My admittedly poor understanding of high wine culture is that the tastevin is worn on a chain around the neck by someone called something like the sommelier. His job is to test the wine by slosshing it around in this thing. Not sure how it works.

Commercial gift silverware is a very strange subject. No one has done much research on it. My only thought here is that Hoover produced commercial vacuum cleaners for restaurants and used this as a sign that really high class places needed them.

As silverhunter has already noted, Hoover (in the U.K. at least) makes a line of home wine coolers, seemingly a fairly recent development. A wine taster would be an appropriate little gift to promote sales on both the wholesale and retail level.

silverhunter - doesn't appear that anyone else here has access to another of these, without pictures, your marks will most likely remain a mystery.

Scott Martin, thank you for the explination of the tastevin. It was good to see other patterns, the one I bought looks a little like the older one's. So the pattern is remade by this firm. I can't read clearly the marks standing in the handle. In one stamp, it seems the figures 4g. Could it be possible that for silverplating is used 4 gramm of silver?
I thank you a lot for clear reaction and taking time for it!

Hi there Silverhunter,

I would think that from where it is engraved (on the upper side of the handle), that this wine taster was a gift from the Company to a salesman or to a client. It is inexpensive (cheap) advertising.. Marc

Thank you Mark for your reaction, I think the same, I send still the photo with the marks in the handle, in the left mark is to read 4 G R and the second mark is S ? A ?. I can't find nothing about the factory who made this one. It is bought for 0,50 eurocent (second hand shop) and at H..... website they ask for to buy such one, because they made too little of them.

So I'm glad to have it because I'm fond of wine and silver. Like a gift of the company it's a nice combination. Cheers!

Hello Cheryl (Dragonflywink),

It's good to know that H..... isn't a American Company, a human can be wrong I thought, also from this side. Perhaps it is a good idea for H..... for explore to the U.S.A. and many people can cool their wine into the wine cooler, taste the wine before serving into the beautiful wine taster or whatever it is called.(Also like I learned it's mentioned tastevin).

I have placed this question and if people don't know or recognize the mark (what is possible) they don't have to react.

It is no museum silvered object but at any silver/ed object there can be asked something about it.

So thank you also for nice reaction, greetings Silverhunter (andr).

Hi silverhunter - Hoover is an American company, with a longstanding history in the U.K., and the European company is now a separate entity. On a side note, I have a a British friend who refers to vacuuming as "hoovering", and my sweet little Australian Shepherd dog has it as part of her full name because of her habit of efficiently sucking up anything even vaguely edible (Little Miss Sydney Lou Hoover Who).

Nice job with the marks, they are very tiny - can't make them out very well on my monitor, but suspect that they might be French or Belgian silverplate marks.

Dragonflywink thanks again, for explaining the total economic story behind Hoover now I just have to wait for Belgium or french reactions about the marks.

Also thanks Scott Martin, now even I can see the marks without my glasses, wonderful sized and extremely sharp! I hope this will give still more reactions!

I hope it is a 17th century piece, silvered in the late 20th century in order of Hoover, send to Holland by Hoovercraft and now found his owner. America/Great-Brittain/France/Belgium Thanks for this beautiful tastvine and information.

Dragonflywink (cheryl)-
The story about the dog I have to find out in my dictionary. it's to much technical information but I hope your dog is still in good condition!

Thanks again!
