We don't typically cover the silver metals market here as we are interested in the beautiful things made of silver, but I thought it noteworthy that the last of the Hunt Brothers, Herbert Hunt, died on April 9. For those unfamiliar with the Hunt brothers silver play in the 1970's, the 3 brothers accumulated a huge quantity of silver storing it all over the world and using as collatoral to buy silver futures contracts. Between September 1979 and January 1980, the price of silver rose from around $11 per ounce to around $50. It was reported at the time that the Hunt brothers controlled up to two thirds of a year's supply of silver. When the price tanked to $10.80 on March 27, 1980, known as "Silver Thursday" the brothers were left facing creditors, brokerage houses and government regulators. Adieu, Herbert. IP: Logged |
