Yesterday I encountered two nice pieces of Victorian sterling jewelry, and I have been unable to identify either one. The first was a wide, adjustable bangle bracelet decorated in an aesthetic movement style. It was marked STERLING SILVER in an arch, over HG&S. I can't find a jeweler by those intials. I do think HG&S was the manufacturer, rather than just the retailer. Any ideas? I didn't buy the piece, so I don't have photos. The other piece was a nicely engraved Japanesque chatelaine hook, decorated with a bird and butterfly. This piece was marked STERLING in an arch over RB. It looked to be of high quality, and the engraving looked like Gorham or Tiffany. Any ideas on that one? Any guesses would be helpful. I am no jewelry expert! IP: Logged |

I have heard the later mark attributed to Reeves & Browne of Newark, but I have seen no documentation for it. Perhaps Ulysses Dietz can verify it. IP: Logged |

1. I'll bet the bracelet wase made in Birmingham, England in the 1880s. Much such Aesthetic jewelry-- bracelets, brooches, etc.-- was not marked with proper British hallmarks. HG & S is the maker, but I don't know who it is. I don't believe a lot of American jewelry is marked "STERLING SILVER," usually it's just "STERLING." Usually the bracelets have engraved Japanesque decoration, and maybe stamped borders as well; some has applied rose & yellow gold. 2. I'm less sure about this one. It's definitely English or American. What was the shape of the piece? Was there additional decoration, besides engraving? Were there any other noticeable features? IP: Logged |

Thanks for the help! Having recently acquired a copy of Warman's Jewelry guide, I think the braacelet is a lot like those pictured from Birmingham. This one is all die stamped, though; there is no engraving. As for the chatelanine hook, it was V shaped, with a little clasp dangling from the point to accept the chains. The V was hollow, like a thin box, divided into three sections, with the bird highlighting the top, the butterfly in the middle section, and some other engraving on the lower bit. The three sections were jointed together, like a suit of armor. The mark was on the inside of the top section. I hope this makes sense to you. I'm not sure it does to me! Anyway, thanks again!
