When examining a piece of jewelry, and considering purchasing it, what do you consider more important: the design or the signature? Would you rather sacrifice a valuable maker for a better design or vice-versa? Obviously, some makers are just more valuable than others...I'm not really sure why that is, sometimes. My case in point will be the Frank Whiting Co. To me, jewelry and silver accessories (not so much flatware) by this firm are on a par with Shiebler, whose pieces seem to command much more money. I actually like many of Frank Whiting's pieces better than Shiebler's. Below I've included a composite image of some FW pieces I have to show how innovative the company was.
1. Pillbox; hand-chased floral design w/applied stamped Japanese man medallion. 2. Detail of #1 3. Cuff links with applied cast gilt fish, swan, and pine sprays. 4. Cuff links with applied crab & butterfly (not signed by FW, but based on construction & style feel that it is) 5. Bar pin w/flowers, leaves, etc. 6. The company mark, sometimes used during 1880s & early 1890s, always used after 1896. The items show a nice range of subjects, and the pieces are very well made. What are your thoughts on designer vs. design? IP: Logged |

Design v. Maker is a great question which we have debated over many a good dinner with silver friends. I think once you get to a certain comfort level with whatever your area of interest, design and style take on a greater importance. Maybe it is because we would all like to find the next "Shiebler." We would all certainly like to find the quality without having to pay the exhorbitant prices. But until you feel secure enough in your knowledge to trust your instincts, a well known maker's mark is certainly a thing of comfort. IP: Logged |
