I picked up a kind of nice 18k & enamel stickpin over the summer. However, I've been unable to identify the organization it represents. I decided to check here in case somebody knew or had stumbled across it in researching silver. There is a white Maltese cross, with lions in between each leg of the cross. The center shows a thistle (Scotland?) and a rose (England?) growing from one stem, which has what look like shamrocks (Ireland?). Surrounded is the motto "Tria juncta in uno," which seems to mean "Three joined in one;" the motto continues on the bottom leg of the cross: "Ich Dien"..."With God." The central portion is surrounded by a laurel wreath, which I believe symbolizes victory. I suspect the piece is British. This would fit with the what appears to be British symbolism. However, I cannot figure out what, exactly, the design stands for. Can anybody help?

I guess this pin is connected to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, a Chivalry/charitable organisation which includes the St. John's Ambulance groups active in many countries. Now your photo is gone, but you might check that the lions in each leg of the cross are all lions and not two lions and two unicorns. IP: Logged |

I was completely off the mark. This pin is related to the "Order of the Bath", the second highest order of chivalry in Britain. It was founded in 1725 and expanded in 1815 to include more classes of membership. The order has its headquarters in Westminster Abbey, with a special chapel reserved for the knights. I believe they also have a library or archive at the Abbey. However, what is interesting about this particular pin is the central floral motif - certainly combining England, Scotland and Ireland. In the official decorations for the order, the centre contains THREE CROWNS, generally thought to represent the three united nations. PS. I believe that "Ich Dien" means "I serve" IP: Logged |

Here is a description for the second level of the order, the Companions: Military Companions (CB) wear only the neck badge (1.5" wide). The badge is a gold Maltese cross of eight points, enamelled white, each point tipped with a gold ball, and in each angle between the arms of the cross, a gold lion. The central device consists of the rose, thistle and shamrock issuing from a sceptre and three crowns. Surrounding the central device is a red enamelled bandlet with TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO in gold. Around this circle are two branches of laurel, enamelled green, and below this is a blue enamel scroll with ICH DIEN in gold. IP: Logged |
