You need to take a jewelers loupe- 10X power or higher and carefully examine the piece. If you don't find any marks that might indicate the silver content (ie: numbers such as 925 for sterling or letters like EPNS that stand for electroplated nickel silver), you need to look for wear spots. Usually, a plated item will have high spots (areas that were rubbed a lot in cleaning) that are more worn. These areas will typically show a brassy finish under the plating. Other tests include acid test and the old magnet trick. If a magnet sticks to it, it is not sterling. What is the piece in question? Are there any marks on it? Good luck with it! Stacy IP: Logged |

I just tried the magnet test and I could not get it to work On EPC Eletro Plate on Copper, or on NS Nickle Silver... ? Couldn't get the magnet to stick to a penny either...? The flex test is the one I count on if the piece is not maked... IP: Logged |
