Hello, I was just wondering if there was a simple test that could be carried out to determine if an item of jewellery is actually sterling silver. Maybe something like the nitric acid test for gold. Thank you for your time. Anakaye. KayeKaye IP: Logged |

Hi. Yes, there is an acid test available for silver (and platinum) as well. You can buy them on eBay inexpensively. Generally the piece is scratched onto the touchstone to leave a visible deposit (please do not file notches in your silver!). Then the testing solution is dropped onto the deposit. If the liquid turns a certain color (on my kit, brownish-red to red) it is silver. If it turns another color, it isn't. I have found that experience is the best tool for identifying silver. I don't really use or like to use my silver acid kit, since you can't do it without scratching the silver. I hope this helps. Paul IP: Logged |
