Is a hallmark and makers mark the same? What's the difference? IP: Logged |

Often both terms are used interchangeably - but technically this is incorrect. Hallmarks are official stamps - originally applied by trade guilds, and sometimes later by government agencies, - which guarantee the quality of the silver. Typically - as with British sterling - they consist of a stamp for silver quality, the place where the silver was tested (or assayed) and a date code, as well as the responsibility mark (usually but not always the maker)who could ultimately be penalised if the item turned out to be below par! Not all countries or regions have hallmarks - the USA for example does not. The maker's mark is exactly that - no more or less - and attests only to his or her reputation. IP: Logged |

This question is an interesting coincidence. Dale and swarter are working on a SSF FAQ on the same. It should be available soon. IP: Logged |
