I do not recognize the name. Unfortunately, it was probably made by one of the countless thousands of silversmiths and jewelers about whom nothing is now known. Please post pictures if you can, I would be interested in seeing what the items look like; perhaps seeing the items will help us provide a little more information. IP: Logged |

A quick search on the internet yeilded the following. Sara M. Sanford is a professional jeweler and founding member and past president of the Creative Metal Arts Guild in Portland, Oregon. I have no idea if this is the type of work Ms. Sanford does. Claire Sanford is a Mass. jeweler and metalsmith. Claire is a metalsmith jeweler and a partner in Top Dog Studio in Gloucester MA. She received a BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts, an MFA in Metal Arts from Boston University's Program in Artisanry, and was the recipient of two grants from the Massachusetts Council for the Arts. She has taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Massachusetts College of Art, and in many workshops across the country. Claire has written a fine article on patination of metals. Both of the above are current craftswomen. It might be possible to contact them and see what their maker's marks look like. Sanford is also a name seen on American Indian made jewelry. I saw an American Indian style bracelet this weekend at our local antique fair marked Sanford. It looked to be of commercial manufacture with stamps that were available during the early to mid century. The bracelet was not marked sterling and I suspect these were made to be sold to tourist trade by non Indians. Something that may have been available at a road side rest stop during the 50's.
