We were interested to discover that both Alvin and Wood & Hughes made jewelry. We realize that it was not unusual for many flatware and holloware makers to produce jewelry as well, but we had never seen pieces by Alvin or Wood & Hughes. Here are two photos of silver jewelry pieces, one by each maker, also showing the backs with the marks (credit for the photos belongs to our webmaster): IP: Logged |

The Alvin piece looks very like a handle for a tray. Which might explain something, Alvin made tray handles some of which went onto real trays and some of which became pins. Wood & Hughes made silver, they were smiths. Which to my mind at least means that no area of silversmithing was out of their expertise. Thank you for sharing these beautiful items with us. They are fascinating. IP: Logged |

Cheryl & Richard, thanks for posting these finds. I am also interested in jewelry by flatware makers. This is the first time I have seen an Alvin jewelry object. W & H jewelry is a little more common; a medallion piece is described in one or more of the Warman's jewelry books. I will try to post a picture of an 1870s W & H bracelet I found awhile ago. Does anybody have other such jewelry to share? IP: Logged |
