Hi there, this is the first time I've been on here but wondered if someone may be able to help? My Dad has an engraved Silver Cross that has the Birmingham Assay mark, with the makers initials AJH. I'm not too sure of the year, as the date mark is a cross and I can't figure out which cross it matches. I don't think it's old at all, but would like to know the makers? If anyone can help with that I'd much appreciate it. :-)

Could the date mark possibly be a "t"?

No, I'm quite sure it's an x, quite italic looking.

Aha! When you said, "cross," I assumed you meant the religious symol. The x is a date letter, but to get the exact year, I need to know whether it is capital or small x and the shape of the punch in which it is set. A picture would really help.

Ooops, my mistake, sorry! I don't have the equiptment to be able to post a photo, but I can tell you the punch is a square shape. I have no idea of how to tell if it is a capital or not. Not very good at this, am I!

The dates could be 1897/8, 1922/23, or 1946/7. The 1897/8 mark is the closest thing to an actual square. The other dates use a a square with three pionts at the bottom, one on each edge, one in the mddile. However, the 1897/8 x looks almust cursive with the ends curling slightly.

I have had no luck with the makers mark. If the "J" is an &, there is an A&H silver comany. Hope this helps.

If as you guess the cross is not very old, and the "x" is "quite italic looking", it could be as late as 1997. Have a look at the different date letter cycles for Birmingham here: dateletters
