This is a Hans Hansen bracelet. The seller said that it was their grandfather's who was one of the last remaining groups or regiments of Nazi solders called the omega men. The bracelet is in the shape of the Greek omega symbol clasped by a ring. The seller claimed that this bracelet was specially made by Hans Hansen for these solders. The omega shape symbolizing the last group of Nazi solders and the ring to represent the unity among them. I don't know if this story is true or not but I was wondering if anyone had any info on this? Hansen 925S DENMARK 259 (o925m)) and on the ring it has the same thing but instead of 259 it reads 259-1 IP: Logged |

I teach a course on the Third Reich and have never heard of the "Omega Men," nor have I ever seen any reference to the use of the Greek letter Omega as a Nazi symbol. This does not mean there was no such group, but I find it improbable. TM IP: Logged |

I would like to see a picture of the bracelet. Family lore about antiques is often exaggerated or just plumb untrue. I am not sure that I am convinced by the seller's story about his/her grandfather, especially in light of what tmockait says. If you can post a picture, it would be easier to figure out what, if anything, the bracelet signifies. [This message has been edited by Paul Lemieux (edited 01-21-2005).] IP: Logged |

Memorial pages on the web to departed parents of currently living people seem to be fairly popular among Germans. Membership in a small interesting group tends to be featured. Also, the web contains a plethora of sites dedicated to common as well as arcane aspects of the war. Those that don't have a site of their own at least get discussed on various forums. As a search incorporating 'Omega' and various likely ways of refering to a special unit brings up no even remotely possible links, the story seems very improbable. IP: Logged |

Believe most Hans Hansen jewelry bears 3-digit style numbers, my guess is that yours is just another nice design by a quality maker. A seller using supposed Nazi provenance to sell something bothers me, especially the story that a Danish silversmith would do anything for Nazi soldiers towards the end of the war. Yielding to TM as a history expert, but believe that the Danish were actively resisting the German occupation in the last years of WWII and anti-Nazi sentiment was very high and basically nation-wide. I concur with Cheryl that given the feelings of the Danes, it would be unlikely that a prominent silversmith such as Hans Hansen would accept a commission from the Nazi occupiers. In addition, the state of the silver market during this time and the condition of the Hans Hansen firm also would make it difficult to execute such a commission. Between 1940 when the Nazis occupied Denmark and 1943 when a state of emergency was declared following the revolt of the Danish people, little silver was manufactured. After 1943 the economy was in shambles, there was no demand for silver products, and the raw material was unavailable. Silver production virtually ceased. Hans Hansen died prematurely at the age of 56 in 1940. His son, Karl Gustav Hansen, also a gifted silversmith and arguably a better designer than his father, took over the firm successfully at the age of 25. So during the war years, the firm was in a state of great uncertainty and transition. As Cheryl suggests, the maker’s mark and design number on the bracelet would allow you to determine conclusively if this is a Hans Hansen piece from the years in question. The timing would suggest that to be very, very unlikely. IP: Logged |

One more thing, most Western European nations have restrictions on selling Nazi "memorabilia." TM IP: Logged |
