How do you restore the look of silver to oxidized sterling jewelry?

Unlike silverware, you don't have a relatively flat surface to work with. You can't apply polish and rub.

Dipping in something seems like the only solution (pun unavoidable), but the thought of Tarnex or the like makes me shudder.

Any suggestions?

I usually use a soft cloth with polish on it. This cleans the surface nicely. And crevices in jewelry that are too deep to reach this way frequently look better with the oxidation present. If hard-to-reach or enclosed areas on jewelry contain grime, grease, or a hairball, then you can probably use a soft toothbrush with warm water and a little detergent.
